The hunt for Ed Snowden took a surprising and quite pitiful turn on Wednesday when a plane carrying Bolivian President Evo Morales’ was refused permission to fly through France and Portugal’s airspace and was diverted to Austria.
All of this was most likely done on orders from the State Department. Austrian officials were then ordered by the U.S. to search the plane to make sure that Snowden wasn’t on it. Obviously Bolivian officials didn’t comply with the search request although they vehemently denied Snowden was on the plane.
Can we just take a second and let the audacity of this sink in? The United States diverted a private plane carrying the president of another country and then demanded that the plane be searched. If something like this were to happen to the POTUS it would be considered an act of war and we’d be bombing the shit out of that country withing 48 hours. Amazing. One can only imagine what the rest of the world must be thinking of us right now.
