Screenshot_2013-07-11-05-21-44Google is rolling out a completely overhauled version of its Android Maps app with an updated iOS app to follow soon. The new maps lets you overlay traffic and incident reports, bike routes or public transportation routes.

The new traffic map is sporting live incident reports and will automatically reroute you to a faster route if something happens that suddenly causes your normal route to get backed up. So, pretty much like every single day on the BQE.

The coolest new feature by far is the Explore feature. With the press of a button you can pull up restaurants, fast food chains, hotels, shopping centers and pretty much anything else you can think of that you would need. Along with this Google is really putting the ratings and reviews of all of these places front and center the one thing Google has nailed about them is how simple it is to rate a place immediately without any extra click-throughs or hoops to jump through. This doesn’t bode well for Yelp.

Google Maps is already one of my most used apps. I use it constantly to plan trips around the city on public transportation with buses and subway directions and anytime I’m in a car Navigation is my go to GPS app of choice. With this update I can see myself using it even more. You could just pick a part of the city you want to see and once you’re there use the explore feature to find out cool things to do while you’re there, no advanced planning needed.

I’ve added a gallery below if you want to check out some screenshots of some of the new features.

If you don’t see the update in the Play store yet don’t worry, Google is rolling it out and a fairly fast pace and you should be seeing it soon.
