This redesign just rolled out tonight and, as of right now, it looks like a regional roll out so if you’re not seeing it right now it should switch over soon. Google made a huge deal about adding the black header on top to visually pull together all of their properties and to make it easy to link to all of the other Google apps. Thankfully they’ve come to their senses and gotten rid of that clunky piece of shit.
This is what Google.com is supposed to look like, stark, with tons of white space and an almost complete focus on the search box.
Instead of accessing your apps in the top header they’ve moved completely off the page into a new drawer by your profile link. It looks like it also takes your two most commonly used Google apps and keeps those out next to your profile link. I’m just guessing about the two links being customized to your two most used apps though, I just think it makes sense for me since it’s showing Gmail and images. Those are probably my two most commonly used apps.
It seems like every time anything at all is changed on the web there’s going to be a group of people who hate it. Get reedy for the Google+ groups demanding that they bring back the black header across the top.
I love this new (old) design. The black bar is still there in Gmail and the apps but it looks as if it’s been made considerably thinner.
What do you think? Do you like the new look?
