Yes, you read that right, and no, this isn’t a joke. Canadian dentist Dr. Michael Zuk bought one of John Lennon’s molars at an auction and now he’s hoping to get enough good DNA off of it to clone the ex-Beatle. Zuk paid $30,000 for the tooth back in 2011. One would think that if he’s actually able to somehow clone John Lennon that would be a pretty good investment.
“If scientists think they can clone mammoths, then John Lennon could be next,” Zuk told The Examiner. People thought he was crazy for spending that much money on a rotten tooth but he obviously knew something no one else did. The actual reason why he was buying it.
“To potentially say I had a small part in bringing back one of rock’s greatest stars would be mind-blowing,” he told The Examiner.
“I am nervous and excited at the possibility that we will be able to fully sequence John Lennon’s DNA, very soon I hope. With researchers working on ways to clone mammoths, the same technology certainly could make human cloning a reality.”
He’s even written a song about the tooth. The song is called…wait for it..”Love me Tooth”
Since purchasing the tooth in 2011, he has featured in TV programs about DNA and used it to promote cancer awareness.
The tooth has already been sent to a lab in the U.S. for DNA sequencing.
