Blen Corp, a DC-based IT firm, has created a freelance job board for furloughed government workers. The site is unfurlough.us and was built in less than five hours using the open source Drupal CMS, the same CMS most of the new .gov websites are maintained on.
We thought how we can help and the answer was obvious to us; leverage our technical capabilities to a good use by connecting freelance gigs with these furloughed employees. So, we started looking around and sure enough people were creating Facebook groups, tweets, etc.. looking to generate some income while they were furloughed. We came across a couple of cool places, but we especially liked what 1776 — a DC based startup incubator — was doing. They created a Google Spreadsheet and have people and companies add their information.
We had our team focus on the task at had and sketched, designed and built the site in under 5 hours using Drupal and launched it around 12:30 am today. We tweeted, added it to Drupal groups and posted it on Hacker News. But, we were not prepared to what happened next.
The site has already crashed twice today due to unexpected spikes in traffic after being featured on virtually every huge tech site on the web.
This is a brilliant move on Blen Corp’s part. Not only is a great, free service that will definitely help some people out during the furlough but it’s the best kind of advertising possible, effective and free.
