There is nothing worse than Spend 6+ months in a gym (and thousands of dollars) with a trainerJust to step on the scales and find that you have made no progress.

What do you need from a personal trainer?
First and foremost, understand that your diet is 80-90% of the fight.
Even if you've worked 60 to 90 minutes with a trainer every day, you still have 22 to 23 hours a day to screw things up if you don't eat right!
Hopefully your trainer will also help you develop a nutritional strategy and workout strategy that is aligned with your goals.
First, choose your goals and determine if a trainer you will work with is right for you. As with dating, you can meet someone who is awesome but doesn't suit you.
If someone is a competitive marathon runner, they might not be a great powerlifting trainer and vice versa.
So, to find a personal trainer, start with your goals:
- Are you trying to lose 300 pounds? 20 pounds? Get 10% body fat?
- Are you trying to get stronger or do your first handstand?
- Do you want to become a competitive powerlifter?
- Would you like to run your first 5 km?
- Do you just want to get in shape, feel better and have fun with exercise?
These goals largely determine the type of trainer you are looking for.
ERROR # 1: Do not make sure that your trainer has expertise in the field in which you want to train.
Expertise in one area doesn't necessarily make them good in another!
After that, you'll want to consider what you need from your personal trainer:
- Are you looking for a powerlifting trainer? to show you the basics (squats, deadlifts, bench) to get your form right? Just a few meetings in advance and a few later to confirm that you are on the right track might be enough.
- Are you new to training or do you want to start your first 2 months of training? with 2 sessions a week to keep you disciplined?
- What kind of person are you Do you need more hands-on guidance or more space during your workout to take responsibility and thrive on your own? Do you need someone to cheer you on or do you need hard love from someone calling you about your shit?
Once you have set the right expectations with what you want and how long you need a trainer to be, you can then choose one that will hopefully work for you.
Let yourself be matched with a coach who fits your personality!
How to Find a Good Personal Trainer
Once you've found a trainer to work with, the next step should always be an in-depth discussion.
ERROR # 2: Blindly accept what your trainer tells you without making sure you match!
she SHOULD Listen to yourself completely and hear your whole story.
she SHOULD Ask about previous injury problems or exercise experience. If you are injured or have shortcomings this is something they should know so that they can create a great program for you.
she SHOULD Ask about your diet. If they don't ask about your diet, you are wasting your time.
she SHOULD practice what they preach. You don't have to be an Olympian, but you should have a healthy lifestyle.
she SHOULD Share their expertise and how they can help you. They should be able to share customer past successes with you or point out their references and track record.
she SHOULD set correct expectations. They don't get ripped apart in a month, but they can let you know that it can take many months to get in shape or develop the right habits.

What Are The Signs Of A Bad Personal Trainer?
Beware of the coaches for entertainment practice with a routine that does not suit your goals.
ERROR # 3: Thinking a workout is more effective because it is confusing.
A lot of trainers are just trying to confuse you with unnecessarily complex movements and subject all of their clients to roughly the same cutting plan.
Why? because they know it makes them look knowledgeable without actually having to do anything effectively:
“Now balance on that bosu ball while you do those dumbbell squats and stand on one foot with your tongue out! Muscle confusion!
I hope you saved some energy for the in-line machine. "
Hard workouts are great, but remember that while it's easy to make someone tired ("Do 100 burpees!"), It is harder to help someone improve and build momentum slowly.
Sure, it could increase your heart rate and tire you, but if it doesn't help you achieve your goals in a way that you couldn't do at home, what are you paying for?
Or they may just have just received basic certification and dropped out of their training there, relying on “conventional wisdom” instead of doing research and building experience.
If your trainer says any of the following, run to the high hills:
- "Yeah, you don't want to crouch too low – it's bad for your knees."
- “Use this machine; It's safer for you than dumbbells. "(unless you have an injury.)
- “Yes, you should mainly be using your back. That is why it is called "back squat". "
- "This (ab) exercise will burn fat out of your stomach in no time" (You may not realize that you are reducing fat.)
I heard all of these noises from real trainers in real gyms, and it made me cry like the Native American people in the 1970s:
Your trainer should be results-oriented. not focused on scheduling a new session for you and keeping you close.
I often see clients who work with coaches for months and this client never looks any different.
The coach is only interested in cashing one more check.
Notice, Your personal trainer works for YOU: Don't let them create a program that doesn't suit your needs!
Do you adapt your training to eliminate any injuries you may have?, or are they just giving you cookie cutter training?
Do they encourage or help you to be as successful as you would like to be encouraged?or are they scrolling through Instagram models on their phones while you do your sets?
Are they putting the time in so they can see you are getting results? or are they using the time so they can tick the box and collect your money?
You are paying money for that person's expertise and attention – finding someone to take these things seriously isn't too much to ask.
What certifications should a personal trainer have?
There are a variety of personal trainer certifications and other "credibility indicators".
The more traditional route – a degree in exercise science or kinesiology can mean that the coach in question is knowledgeable about the human body.
However, this does not speak of experiences they may or may not have had in real circumstances.
6 of the most popular personal trainer certifications are:
- NSCA: National Strength and Conditioning Association
- ACSM: American College of Sports Medicine
- NASM: National Academy of Sports Medicine
- AS: American Council on Exercise
- NPTI: National Personal Training Institute

CrossFit Certifications are completed in a single weekend. CrossFit certification doesn't make a trainer bad (there are plenty of great CrossFit trainers out there!), But it doesn't guarantee great performance either.
Here are our thoughts on CrossFit.
A certification from NPTI – the National Personal Training Institute – is a certificate that you get when you attend a full school for personal training (instead of attending a class or taking a test).
While no certification can promise excellence, we believe trainers with NPTI certifications are worth considering.
CAVEAT TO ALL OF THESE:: A lot of the NOT certified trainers are amazing and many other trainers have the elite certifications and are terrible trainers.
ERROR # 4: Blindly accepting a trainer's credentials or discounting a trainer without specific credentials.
Certifications can be a starting point, but shouldn't be the determining factor.
One of the most important things to look for in your trainer isn't a testimonial or certification at all, but real experience and enthusiasm to help you achieve your goals.
Do you fancy a power lift or Olympic lifting? Look for someone who has successfully competed in their field, or someone who actually trains athletes who compete!
Do you need to lose a lot of weight? Ask a trainer to share people's success stories with you.
In our view, the most valuable step is finding a trainer with proven experience and a track record of performance or coaching (or both) around your goals to ensure quality.
Proof of Entitlement is just a starting point.
Trainers aren't cheap, but the benefits can be invaluable.
Remember, you are paying not just for their time with you, but for the years they have spent learning, training, and coaching.
It is the years behind certification that make your time so precious. So expect the cost of a trainer to be significantly higher than the cost of a basic membership to your gym.

What does a personal trainer cost? Are personal trainers worthwhile?
The cost of a personal trainer can vary significantly depending on:
- Where do you live (in an expensive city, small town, etc.).
- The amount and duration of your workouts.
- What kind of workout are you looking for?
But you want details.
The average North American coach charges $ 55 for an hour. (1)
That's an "average" so let's break it down a bit.
Here are the prices for working with a trainer in various capacities at my generic commercial gym in the NYC area (definitely on the more expensive end):
- 4 sessions per month: $ 95 per session = $ 380 / month
- 8 sessions per month: $ 85 per session = $ 680 / month
- 12 sessions per month: $ 79 per session = $ 948 / month
Is this price more or less than expected?
This is how much a personal trainer costs:
- Global Gyms: Most big box gyms offer personal training:
- LA Fitness: You can expect to pay around $ 60 per session.
- 24-Hour Fitness: It's approximately $ 80 per session.
- Fitness anytime: only $ 35 per session.
- Luxury gyms: When you go to a more upscale gym like Equinox, expect luxury prices of $ 110 + per hour.
- Personal training at home. If you don't want to go to the gym, a personal trainer can come to your home. The cost of this could be anywhere, but a rough average would be about $ 65 for an hour.
Different trainers have different qualifications and expertise, which results in very different training courses experience.
That can be very important.
ERROR # 5: Thinking "more expensive" automatically means "better results".
Cost is not the right metric. VALUE is the right metric!
Depending on your goals and the outcomes you are looking for:
- $ 30 per session You may be paying too much for a crap trainer that gives you a general workout and doesn't care about you.
- $ 100 per session could be a STEAL if it's a great trainer who gets to know your life and personality, motivates you as motivated as you need to be, and helps you overcome a plateau if you stop.
This is why you should remember your goals in order to get in shape is important when buying a personal trainer.
If you want to do 5 sessions to improve your powerlifting technique, this is different from hiring a trainer to be with you in person 3 times a week to take you to the gym.
How To Think About Hiring A Coach::
You don't just pay for an hour.
They pay for their years of experience, schooling, training and expertise.
You pay to outsource ALL of your fitness questions to someone who knows what they're doing.
Someone who gives you confidence that you are exercising right.
So instead of "I'm paying this trainer for 1 hour, it's too expensive," you are really paying for confidence, momentum, and (hopefully) results.
As someone who has worked with an online trainer since 2014, I would pay my trainer loads of money (just don't tell him that) because I love getting results after years of struggle.
How does a personal trainer compare to our online coaching program?

Hiring an online personal trainer has very real advantages and disadvantages. Be sure to read the next section.
So a trainer can be AMAZING and worth every penny IF you have the right one who also plays an active role in your diet.
After all, workouts only make up 1-3 hours a week.

SHOULD I HIRE AN ONLINE PERSONAL TRAINER? What are the pros and cons of an online personal trainer?
Warning: I'll be slightly biased in this area, but I'll share the honest pros and cons of online training:
As already mentioned, I have been working with an online trainer since 2014. This allowed me to prove an internet troll was wrong and then lose 22 pounds in 6 months while getting super strong!
Here are the benefits of online personal training:
# 1) Freedom to meet your schedule. With a personal online coach, you can train when and where you want to adjust your schedule. Your coach will create the training program for you in advance so that you can customize it as you wish.
Compare this to a traditional trainer and you are at the mercy of a busy schedule. If they only have 8 a.m. on Friday morning and you're not a morning person, conflict will arise.
# 2) Persistent global accountability. I borrow this phrase from a NF coaching client, Jeff (his track record is great). No matter where you are in the world, your online trainer will be with you.
That said, accountability never stops. If you are traveling for work, your coach can plan this and put together a special travel routine for you. Moving for Work? No problem – your trainer will still be there.
# 3) Nutritional advice. With most traditional personal trainers, you only get in touch with them during your scheduled visits: they help you train, and that's about it.
With an online personal trainer, you are always connected whenever you have internet access. And I would imagine most online coaching programs would work with you on the most important part of the equation: eat healthier!
AKA everything that happens outside of the gym in the 23 hours.
# 4) Cheaper. Most personal trainers are expensive, especially if you train with them two or three times a week.
This is because when your trainer is working with you, he cannot work with other people at the same time.
If you are working with an online trainer because you are not training them 1-on-1 in the gym, these can provide more cost-effective guidance.
When you factor in their availability via chat and their help with habits and your diet, you will see a life changing experience in finding a coach that suits your personality.
# 5) This might be the only option. With so many gyms closed because of the pandemic, you might not even have a huge choice here. Here is our guide to staying in shape (while staying indoors) if you need to work out from home.
When I compare online trainers to regular trainers, I share the cons as if you have the option between a GREAT online trainer and a GREAT personal trainer.
Neither is guaranteed.
Here are the downsides of an online trainer versus a real world equivalent:
# 1) Your coach can't do the job for you. Nothing prevents you from skipping your workout and lying to your online coach that you did. Nobody wins in this scenario, but I can totally see it.
Yes, an online coach can't lift the weight for you or yell at you to drop the donut. You have to do the work!
# 2) No real-time feedback and instant form review. If you're learning how to do a powerlift, or if you're riding a certain heavy lift, having a trainer right there is HUGE.
They can tell you to squat down a little more. They can guide you through the movement and consistently remind you to stay in good shape even when you are tired.
While we create check-in videos with coaches and clients sending clips back and forth, it is not the same when someone criticizes you in real time.
If you're nailing a particularly challenging lift or want to learn a dangerous gymnastic move, personal collaboration with a trained professional is invaluable.
# 3) The value of the sunk cost. When you pay for a month of online coaching, nothing inherently motivates you to hit the gym when it's cold and you're tired – your coach can't yell at you, and you won't let anyone down in the moment if you can Not
Compare this to working in person with a real coach.
You paid $ 100 for a session. If you don't show up, the * POOF * money is gone. So you're telling yourself, "I've already paid for it and my coach is going crazy, I should probably go."
And then you go. And you're so glad you did.
Although your online coach can determine that you haven't signed into your app yet and ask what's going on, this is an afterthought compared to having a personal coach stand up.
There is a lot to consider when discussing personal training versus an online personal trainer.
I wouldn't say that one format is clearly better or better than another. It really depends on what you are looking for and what your circumstances are.
MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE:: I've been working with an online trainer since 2014 and it has really changed my life.
I had some goals that I had missed despite decades of efforts and it took a great coach to come up with the right strategy. So I say (jokingly) that I went from Steve Rogers to Captain America.
And it was my trainer's programming that left me deadlifting 420 pounds with a body weight of 172 pounds:
I'm not going to set powerlifting records, but I'm healthier, happier, and stronger every month and I'm damn proud of that.
For someone who cannot afford a top professional coach for every session, it is barely a second to have an online coach to create your programs and guide your food choices.

How to hire a personal trainer
HERE'S MY ADVICE: Give your new personal trainer 5 sessions before you decide things don't work (sessions are often sold in a package at a discount).
The first session is often exploratory, explanatory, and introductory, and the trainer needs to test your limits and movements to build on.
This is not a strategy for getting fit quick, it is a strategy that can take months and months to find the right person to support you on your journey.
Don't expect miracles in a day!
A few words of wisdom when hiring a trainer:
Don't use your trainer as an excuse:: Too many people will hire a trainer and not bother at the gym or kitchen.
Then, if you don't see any results, you can reach out to your friends and say, "Man, my trainer is terrible. So I'm not losing weight / getting stronger / etc."
This happens so much more often than you think. A trainer is a leader like Morpheus.
You have to take the pill and walk through the door yourself.
REVIEW MAKING CONSTRUCTIVE REVIEW: When the trainer asks them to do something (go for a walk every day, throw away junk food, eat vegetables), the client / trainee often comes back with 1,001 reasons why they can't.
No compromise or discussion of possible solutions. That stinks.
Instead of saying "no", offer an alternative solution and negotiate a plan: "I don't really like broccoli. Do you have a way to make vegetables taste better?"
In other words, don't look for problems, but for solutions.
IF YOU ENJOY WORKING WITH YOUR TRAINER:: Let them know and keep working with them.
The more information you can give them about your progress, the easier it will be for them to change your program over time.
IF YOU ARE NOT WORKING WITH YOUR TRAINER:: That's okay too. Not all relationships end in marriages.
Some first dates suck and some coaches aren't what you need.
I think you can be honest with them and let them know it doesn't go well and you won't continue working with them.
Good coaches will ask at this point what they could have done better.
Trainers who are just after your money can make you guilty or ask you to stay with you. Try someone new and keep searching.
REMEMBER: This is a lifelong searchand you are looking for a great guide to help you in your journey.
They will not do the job for you and cannot work miracles.
Have the right expectations, do as you are told, and this could be the best investment you will make in your life!
